Raccoons use their hands as a tool and a sensory organ and this has led to a myth that says that they actually wash food. Washing food is done by repeatedly dipping and rolling food in water. The behavior has led to a belief that raccoons wash food before eating so as to soften it. The behavior isn’t washing food but a constant need for the raccoons to use the hands so as to sense the world and to search for food.

While in the wild, raccoons constantly dab within water so as to search for food in the cabbies and the nooks and when they are in captivity, the behavior can be described as feeling rather than washing. This description seems to be correct since the raccoons roll and rub food evenwhen they are within dry enclosures. They rub hands together even when they aren’t holding a thing.

This myth has been able to persist due to the fact that the raccoons are in a constant state of foraging while in the wild in water and as they handle pretty. This is why it most often looks as though they are washing the food. Raccoons don’t have agoodgrip due to the lake of thumbs that are opposable and so they will hold items using two hands and may roll them in the hands very frequently. If the behavior takes place bear water, it most definitely looks as though they are washing the food.

This action of the raccoon hands is greatly misunderstood. However, it should be noted that the whole things is just a way for the raccoon to work the food all the way to its mouth for purposes of feeding.
