Minneapolis Minnesota Raccoon Control Situation: Hi David, My name is Mia. I live in Minneapolis. The property managers are Sun Realty and the Home Owners Association is held by Don Propertys. I have copied them both on this email. I have Raccoons in the attic of this property which I am renting. Apparently, neither Sun or Don know of the damage that can be done, both to the property and myself because neither one of them are concerned about getting this taken care of. Sundance contacted the owner who is suppose to buy something from Home Depot to remove the raccoons (which I am sure there are more than one) but from your website, I understand that this usually doesn't work and that this needs to be done by a professional. Sundance told me that they contacted Don concerning the roof several months ago, but nothing was done about it. Can you please let them know of the danger that this can cause me and give them a quote on the removal. Since this is a rental property, I am sure one of you is responsible for having this taken care of professionally. I need the raccoons removed before the roof is fix and before something else comes through the hole and through the roof. I will be reviewing the rental agreement to see if this is covered. Also, it is 11:30 Sunday and I haven't seen or heard from the owners. If I need to pay for this, I will do so out of the rent. Please let me know. Mia, Raccoons in the attic is a serious situation, both from a property value perspective and a health perspective. When raccoons live in an attic, they cause considerable damage. Raccoons also pose a serious biohazard. They are host to a number of parasites and diseases that can infest people or pets. Raccoons can carry and spread Canine Distemper, a common and often fatal disease of dogs. It is caused by a virus and is spread most often when animals come in contact with the bodily secretions of other animals, such as raccoons, who are infected with the disease. Raccoons are also carriers of Rabies, a viral disease that causes progressive paralysis and death in mammals, including humans. Any raccoons exhibiting abnormal behavior, such as fearlessness toward humans, awkward and slow movements, or excessive daylight activity should be strictly avoided. Dens or other heavily utilized raccoon areas may be infested with the eggs of Raccoon Roundworm. This parasite can cause severe health problems in humans who accidentally inhale or ingest the eggs found in raccoon feces. You can't just buy some magic product to make them go away. Go ahead and buy your mothball flakes from Home Depot. Technically it's illegal, but much more importantly, it won't work. Removing raccoons is specialty work, more andvanced than any plumbing or electric work. You hire a pro for those services, and you must get a pro to remove raccoons from an attic - IT IS NOT A SIMPLE TASK. -David
